Capt. Sayed Mahbub Helal, a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been honoured with the 'President's Citation' which is regarded as the "Life-Time Achievement" award for an airline pilot. 

This was officially presented to him in Montreal, Canada, the home of ICAO and IFALPA, at the Gala Dinner on 6th May 2017 held at the Montreal Ballroom which is situated in the Hotel Bonaventure during the on-going 72nd Annual conference of the world pilots' forum hosted by the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Association (IFALPA) in the presence of 550 delegates which includes officials from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other industrial partners and stakeholders of the aviation world.

For the first time in the history of the aviation, an Asian pilot achieved this highest award which is a proud moment for Bangladesh and the national flag carrier- Biman Bangladesh Airlines. In every 05 years the Technical Jury Board selects only One Pilot for this Award within the Entire World's Airline Pilots' Community.

This award was given to Capt.Helal for his outstanding contribution towards the improvement of the Airline Pilots'.

Capt S M Helal was the President of Bangladesh Airline Pilots Association (BAPA) for several terms. He joined Biman Bangladesh Airlines in 1984. He was an elected General Secretary of BAPA for consecutive 03 terms and President in 2006-2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013. 

He fought against all odds for the enhancement of professionalism in the pilot community of Bangladesh.

In 2008, he was a major driving force in Biman's decision to purchase new generation aircrafts. He also involved other pilots of BAPA in different policy making sectors for the purchasing of the brand new aircrafts.

During his acceptance speech at the event, he expressed his sincere gratitude to the Honourable Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh for her continuing support in improving the aviation industry of Bangladesh and thanked the Biman board, management team and the employees of Bangladesh Airlines. He dedicated his award to the entire pilot community of Bangladesh.

Capt. Helal retired in 2014 from Biman Bangladesh Airlines as Commander of DC10 aircraft. Currently he is involved in various philanthropic and social outreach programs.
