Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, was established on January 4, 1972 in the newly independent country of Bangladesh in order to establish close communication with the world by air.
The airline started its journey with a DC-3 aircraft. Biman commercially operated its first domestic flight on February 04, 1972 and first international flight on March 07, 1972. The famous Bangladeshi painter Kamrul Hasan designed the logo of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has a rich history. The history of Biman is closely connected with the history of our liberation war. Employees at all levels, including the airline's pilots, took an active part in our great liberation struggle. Former pilots of the airline played a heroic role in the 'Operation Kilo Flight'.
Over the years, F-27, F-28, Boeing 707, DC-10-30, ATP, Airbus A310, Boeing 737-800, Boeing 777-300, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9 and Dash 8-400 aircraft were added to the Biman fleet. Out of the 21 aircraft in our fleet, we have 02 Boeing 787-9, 04 Boeing 787-8, 04 Boeing 777-300ER, 06 Boeing 737-800 and 05 Dash 8-400 aircraft.
From the status of a corporation, Biman Bangladesh Airlines was converted into a public limited company in 2007. It is one of the largest public limited company in Bangladesh. It is fully state-owned and the government appoints a Board of Directors to set policies and guidelines. The board is headed by a Chairman.
There are nine executive directors headed by a Managing Director & CEO for the overall management of the airline.
Currently, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has one of the youngest and most modern aircraft fleets in South Asia. Biman Bangladesh Airlines uses its wide range of network to transport the passengers directly to 23 destinations around the world. Biman is determined to further expand its network in the years ahead.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been awarded the prestigious certificate of registration and accreditation under International Air Transport Association (IATA) Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) program for ground handling operation at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka. This ISAGO certificate will provide confidence among passengers, customer airlines and the regulators that the airline is maintaining internationally accepted standards for ground handling services. Biman is an IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) registered airlines since 2008. These certificates confirm that flights and ground operations are maintaining internationally accepted policies, processes and procedures in delivering services. Biman follows a policy of zero tolerance regarding all safety issues and policies.
The airline is continuously improving the quality of its service including its in-flight entertainment. In addition to the Dreamliners (Boeing 787s), the Boeing 777s and 737-800 aircraft have also been fitted with world-class inflight entertainment (IFE) systems.
Our respected passengers will be able to enjoy classic and blockbuster movies, dramas, telefilms and songs in addition to playing video games. Passengers on the Dreamliners (Boeing 787) can also use Wi-Fi at 40,000 feet above the ground and make phone calls to any part of the world on the way. The business class seats on the Dreamliner can be fully stretched up to 180 degrees like a flat bed. The spacious windows and silent cabin with special lighting arrangements will add an extra refreshing experience to the trip.

In addition to its own aircraft, Biman's ground-handling unit provides ground-handling services to all foreign airlines operating through Bangladesh. Biman Flight Catering Center (BFCC) provides international standard catering services (meals) to many foreign airlines in addition to Biman. BFCC has certification from International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Biman is the only organization to have the European Aviation Safety Agency Part-147 approved training center in Bangladesh named 'Bangladesh Airlines Training Center (BATC)'. BATC has been playing an important role in generating skilled manpower for the aviation sector in Bangladesh.
The Directorate of Engineering & Material Management provides regular maintenance services to aircraft of domestic and foreign airlines, including Biman. The Directorate has successfully completed the C-check activities of the Dreamliner for the first time under its own management and capability and has created a new history in the aviation sector of Bangladesh.
Biman Poultry Complex, a subsidiary unit of Biman, was established in 1976. Its commercial operations began in November 1980. The 76 acres complex is located in the Ganakbari area of Savar, 40 km north-west of the main city of Dhaka. The main products produced here are broiler chickens and eggs which are supplied to the BFCC for the purpose of preparing food for the passengers. It also produces fish, meat, vegetables and various types of fruits.
There is a 'Biman Printing and Publication Department' in the Farmgate area of Dhaka for printing and publishing various types of letters, official files, magazines, memoirs, books, diaries, calendars etc. There is also a Motor Transport department to facilitate the movement of staff. Biman has its own security branch to provide security of aircraft and installations.
As one of the major stake holders of the tourism sector of the country, Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited is making efforts to promote beauty, heritage and tourist attractions of Bangladesh.
